That Time Jim Leyland Respectfully Paused His Umpire Tirade for ‘God Bless America’

Funny and Happy, Wild and Crazy

You’ll have to forgive me if this is a well-known, oft-shared video, but having just stumbled upon it myself earlier today, I have to say I can NOT stop laughing.

Here’s Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland pausing his argument with home plate umpire, James Hoy, back in 2006 because God Bless America began to play:

Apparently, Leyland was tossed after the inning for arguing balls and strikes, but put everything aside – like a good patriot – removed his cap and stood calmly during the 30 second (or so) rendition of ‘God Bless America’ … before going right back at it immediately thereafter.

That’ was probably the longest ‘God Bless America’ has ever lasted for Leyland:

Too funny.
